I bought 500 Velcro balls and had a custom-made Velcro suit to break this world record. Jonathan Hannon and I broke a record on “Live! With Kelly and Mark” in New York City for the second year in a row during Record Breaker Week. This record was easy. The record was for the most balls caught on a Velcro suit in one minute. The previous record was 62.
The biggest challenges were finding a Velcro suit and Velcro balls. After ordering a stick-to-the-inflatable-wall Velcro suit and looking too goofy, we had the show make us custom suits. They shipped to me, and while it had perfect dimensions once on, it had no stretch, and I could barely get it on. I did a couple of practices with my boys, which was scary, and shipped it back to make it bigger.
I finally found some of the smaller Velcro balls and ordered 250 for arrival in 9 days. Eight days later, they were still on the other side of the world. I ordered 200 more that did arrive on time.
I donned the suit in New York City, and the first time Jonathan ever threw these balls at me in the suit was live on the show.
They were tight on time so the entire interview was cut (there is some of it posted to Instagram since they did a half interview after the live show). https://www.instagram.com/p/CxV60IhOLFB/
After Michael called “3, 2, 1, go,” Jonathan started throwing balls at me as fast as he could, one at a time. I moved side to side a few inches to catch the occasional errant balls and rotated after 40 seconds to provide open real estate. Despite Jonathan putting on his shades and throwing the last 3 balls behind his back, we still got 107 balls on the suit in 60 seconds. Then Mark gave it a try, throwing at Ryan Seacrest, but despite not following several rules, including throwing the entire tray at the end, they didn’t approach the record.
Michael announced the results, gave us our certificate, and we celebrated all the way home. Unfortunately, Jonathan’s home is now in Michigan instead of across the street.
