Did Jason Kelce and Dude Perfect Break My Guinness World Record?
Yesterday, I was being pinged asking if I saw Monday Night Football pregame, where Jason Kelce caught a hot dog in a bun thrown by Tyler Toney of Dude Perfect. They were celebrating because it seemed like they had broken one of my Guinness World Records, specifically the record for the furthest thrown hot dog into a bun.
As I watched the footage, I thought they had broken the record. The throw measured 167 feet 5 inches, and Jason Kelce caught it. I wanted to create a post about it so started doing some analysis and then I got a big surprise in one of my first attempts at investigative journalism.
Analyzing the Footage
The first thing I had to do was find a post and footage from the attempt. I found this news article: https://www.themirror.com/sport/american-football/jason-kelce-world-record-espn-813249.
Then I found this video: https://x.com/awfulannouncing/status/1858667339891568663
I noticed was that they were on a football field outside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. But wait—football fields are 100 yards long, right? But there’s no way Tyler could throw a dog 95 yards. With a quick satellite search, I found the field outside AT&T is actually 60 yards in length (not including the end zones). This meant that the hot dog throw from one end of the field to 5 yards short of the end would be 165 feet—they’d need to get 1 hash past that to make it 168 feet to break my record.
The Throw and the Foot
I also zoomed in on the footage and noticed something—Tyler Toney, the thrower, stepped across the designated throwing line, which is something I would argue could disqualify the attempt. When I broke my record, I was very careful to stay behind the line and made sure the video submission was flawless. But there’s more.
I took a closer look at where Jason Kelce’s foot was when he caught the hot dog. It appeared that his foot was only about six inches beyond the 165-foot line. That would mean the throw was no more than 166 feet—not enough to break my Guinness World Record, which stands at 167 feet 5 inches.
So, Did They Break the Record?
The short answer is: no. While the throw and catch were certainly impressive, they didn’t quite make the mark to break my record. Kudos to Jason Kelce and Tyler Toney for attempting something fun and creative, but the record remains mine for now.
Closing Thoughts
Tyler, you’ve already got plenty of Guinness World Records under your belt, and Jason, I’m sure you’re doing just fine without this one! I’m proud to continue holding the record for the furthest thrown hot dog into a bun, and I’m excited to see who will challenge it next. For now, I’ll keep holding on to my title as the person with the most concurrent Guinness World Records!
