Blowing in the Wind

Breaking the Record for Farthest Distance to Blow a Playing Card

The record for the farthest distance to blow a playing card was only 12 feet. Considering I can blow a pea 85 feet, I thought this would be easy. I have had many errant thoughts in my life.

I got a new deck of cards, headed to the racquetball court, and blew. The card barely moved. Big blows made it flutter in place, while weak blows didn’t move it at all. I tried for an hour and could barely get the card to go 6 feet. I thought about giving up, but I know the number one predictor of success is grit, so I went back.

On my second day, I got closer to 12 feet. Close enough that I knew I could do it with more practice.

I went back six more times, trying on different surfaces like a basketball court. My kids even tried. It wasn’t easy, but with the right technique, the card hovered across the floor.

Finally, I got the witnesses and a surveyor for an official attempt. I blew and failed to achieve my goal again and again. Finally, after nearly an hour, the card started floating. It glided across the floor as my single breath propelled it along with a gentle breeze lifting it forward. Further and further it went until it came to rest 33 feet from the start—269% of the original record.

C’mon, my name is David Rush, and I hold the most Guinness World Records
